SHSU faculty publish new book on artist David Adickes

Book examines the Huntsville native’s paintings, sculptures and lasting impact on Texas public art

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS–Sam Houston State University faculty members have collaborated on a new book examining the life and work of renowned artist David Adickes, whose sculptures and paintings have shaped the visual landscape of Texas and beyond.

Monumental: The Art of David Adickes, published by Texas A&M University Press, was written by SHSU faculty members Michael H. Henderson, associate dean and Melissa L. Mednicov, professor, with photography by Rebecca Finley, department of art chair. The book also includes a foreword by Ronald E. Shields, professor.

The volume offers one of the most comprehensive examinations of Adickes’ artistic career, exploring both his paintings and the monumental sculptures that made him internationally recognizable.

“David Adickes created works that are instantly recognizable,” Henderson said. “This book explores the breadth of his career, from his early artistic development to the monumental sculptures that have become landmarks across the state and beyond.”

Adickes, who was born in Huntsville in 1927, studied art in Paris under modernist master Fernand Léger before returning to Texas to build a career that would influence the Houston art scene and public art across the country. He is widely known for large-scale sculptures, including the towering Sam Houston Statue that rises along Interstate 45 near Huntsville.

In Monumental, the authors explore Adickes’ artistic journey and the cultural impact of his work—from modernist paintings to the larger-than-life sculptures of American presidents, historical figures and cultural icons that define much of his public art legacy.

The publication also coincides with a current exhibition celebrating Adickes’ work at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library. The exhibit, on display through May 31, highlights the Huntsville native’s artistic legacy.

Together, the book and exhibition offer new insight into the life and influence of an artist whose work continues to shape how audiences experience public art.

Monumental: The Art of David Adickes is available through Texas A&M University Press and major booksellers.
