Monica Jane Cooper

Monica Jane Cooper, née Sylvester was born July 24th, 1937, in Opelousas, Louisiana. Mrs. Cooper grew up with her wonderful parents, Wilfred Sylvester, who she described as a fun, easygoing World War I veteran, and Olivia LaFleur Sylvester, a loving and highly spiritual lady. Mrs. Cooper’s childhood in Opelousas was shared with her seven siblings, including Father Wilfred Sylvester, and Dolores, Barbara, Rose, Germaine, Berchman and Mary Sylvester.

While Monica was in high school, she met Ed Cooper at a church picnic, who told his grandmother on that day that he met the girl he was going to marry. They later married in St. Landry’s Catholic Church on January 28th, 1956, and would share an exceptional lifetime of love for one another that was admired by all. Ed and Monica moved to Pasadena, Texas where they raised their six children, Fred, Mark, James, Chris, Angelique and Russell, and lived there until Ed’s retirement in 1995.

The couple moved to Huntsville, Texas in 1999 where they spent time fishing on the lake together and enjoyed a lovely and supportive friendship circle in Elkins Lake, with whom they shared memorable travels and many years’ worth of fun weekly social outings. After the passing of Ed in 2012, Monica remained surrounded by the love and support of her friends in the Elkins Lake community, and treasured frequent visits with all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Monica is reunited in Heaven with her devoted husband, Ed Cooper; their cherished children, Chris Cooper and Angelique Cernosek, and daughter in law Becky Cooper; grandson Russell Cooper and great granddaughter, Allie Douglas; parents, Wilfred and Olivia Sylvester; and her siblings Dolores Cormier, Barbara Ziegler, Rose Robert, Germaine Kvinta, and Mary Pitre. Loving survivors of Monica include sons Fred Cooper, Mark (Tammy) Cooper, James (Kim) Cooper and Russell (Stacy) Cooper; grandchildren James (Tami) Cooper, Ryan (Veronica) Cooper, Michael (Megan) Cooper, Christopher (Theresa) Cooper, Bethany (James) Collins, Kyle (Michelle) Cooper, Shawna (John) Holloway, Sarah (Michael) Oliver, Trecinda (Kyle) Rangel, Katie Cooper, Danielle Holzheuser, Bailey (Matthew) Steinhauser, Katelyn (Dakota) Douglas, and Mason Cooper; great grandchildren Kora, Leah, Kylie, Westin, Sean, Jace, Kennadi, Haylie, Holdyn, Layla, Eoghan, Ashton, Haedyn, Monica, Devyn, Elise, Kylan, Kohner, Andrew, Keegan, Kohl, Brock, Cas, Cooper, Emma, Jewel, Jade and Melanie; brother, Berchman Sylvester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation for Mrs. Cooper will take place at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home from 5:00 to 06:30 P.M., with the reciting of the Holy Rosary beginning at 6:30, on Thursday, July 9th, and the Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 10th, followed by refreshments at the Elkins Lake Country Club in Huntsville, Texas.
