Obituary

Dwight Edwin Fugate April 6, 1941- March 2, 2026 Dwight Fugate, beloved Father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, left our world on Monday, March 2, 2026. Dwight was born at home in Burnham, IL, on April 6, 1941, to Gwendolyn and Carl Fugate. In school, Dwight studied agriculture with the intention of becoming a farmer. He won awards for penmanship, played basketball, and was the President of his class.

He was also the class Treasurer, Secretary, FFA, Yearbook, Librarian, Chorus, Track, and dabbled in theater. After school, Dwight worked as a farmer. As a young teen, he rode a horse to school. In later years, he was in the janitorial business (eventually owning his own janitorial company, ESF). He worked in iron and steel construction. He owned a small engine repair shop alongside his son, Rick, at their company, Laser, in Round Rock, Texas.

He later worked with both Rick and Ron at Laser. Dwight married Nancy Ann Shanks in 1959. They had four children. They lived in Macomb and Colchester, Illinois, before moving to Meadville, Pennsylvania, and then to the Woodlands, Texas. In 1987, Dwight married Eileen Sandra Fugate, and they were married for 37 years. They lived in Round Rock, Texas; Minnesota; and Georgia, and finally returned to Bastrop, Texas, where they lived for 15 years.

He and Eileen started a business making personalized gift items. Eileen would make them, and Dwight would paint them to finish them off. Dwight was a member of the Rotary Club and an avid reader. He was a gunsmith by trade, but he could also build everything from a house to a car. Dwight was a hunting enthusiast and raised his sons to be the same. Although he loved to go hunting, he often didn’t shoot because he was watching nature.

Dwight made an impression on anyone he met. He was kind, charismatic, and funny. He was an excellent gardener and loved to grow plants and trees. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Gwendolyn; brother, Roger Fugate; sister, Melba Applegate; son, Ron Fugate; and first wife, Nancy Fugate, and second wife, Eileen Fugate.
