Huntsville Public Library Inspires Learning, Creativity, and Community Connection

From fall festivals and author talks to a new hands-on maker space, the Huntsville Public Library continues to serve as a cornerstone for education, family fun, and local engagement.

A Joyful Leader With a Passion for Community

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — If there’s one thing you notice the moment you meet Amanda Sturdivant, it’s her contagious energy. As one of the driving forces behind the Huntsville Public Library, Sturdivant brings enthusiasm, warmth, and creativity to everything she does.

“I love what I do,” she said. “Every day at the library is different, and it’s all about connecting people — whether it’s families at story time, teens in our programs, or adults finding a new favorite book. We want everyone to feel welcome here.”

A lifelong learner and community advocate, Sturdivant balances her busy schedule managing library programs, caring for her family, and finding time to travel and enjoy concerts with her husband. Her outlook is simple: stay joyful and make a difference every day.

Fall Fun Fest: Family Fun for All Ages

The Huntsville Public Library will host its annual Fall Fun Fest this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is completely free and open to the public, featuring games, food, and a costume contest for children and families.

“This is one of our favorite events of the year,” Sturdivant said. “It’s a great way for families to celebrate the season together — and since it’s all indoors, we’ll have a great time rain or shine.”

Giving Back: Food for Fines

Starting November 1, the library will kick off its Food for Fines campaign — a community food drive that also helps patrons clear overdue fees. Each nonperishable food item donated equals $2 of fine forgiveness, and all items collected will go to the Good Shepherd Mission to support local families in need.

“It’s a way to help others while helping yourself,” Sturdivant said. “The library is about community, and this is a great example of that.”

Celebrating Local Authors and Literacy

Book lovers will have something new to look forward to this fall as the library presents its Local Author Talks on November 6 and 7. Each day will feature five Texas authors — from Huntsville, Tomball, Katy, and San Antonio — sharing their stories, signing books, and answering audience questions.

“This is our second author showcase,” Sturdivant said. “We hosted one earlier this year, and it was such a success. It’s a great way to support local talent and celebrate the love of reading.”

Refreshments will be provided, and admission is free to the public.

The New Maker Space: Creativity in Action

Visitors to the library will also notice something exciting taking shape in the main lobby — a brand-new Maker Space, built to encourage hands-on learning through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

The space will include 3D printers, robotics equipment, sewing and embroidery machines, a Cricut Venture for crafting, and STEM kits for all ages. It’s expected to open by December, complete with workshops and a reservation system for those who want to use the equipment.

“This project has been years in the making,” Sturdivant said. “It’s about empowering people to create, explore, and learn something new. Whether you’re a student or an adult, you’ll be able to bring your ideas to life here.”

More Than Books — A Place to Belong

The Huntsville Public Library has dedicated areas for children, teens, and adults, each designed to meet different needs. The children’s room features games, puzzles, STEM activities, and color-coded reading levels for early learners. Teens enjoy their own space for study and creativity, while adults can unwind in the quiet reading section or the library café, a cozy spot where visitors can enjoy snacks or lunch.

“It’s one of the few places where you can relax, learn, and connect — all for free,” Sturdivant said. “We love seeing families grow with us.”

Visit the Library

The Huntsville Public Library is located at 1219 13th Street in downtown Huntsville. To learn more about upcoming events, visit www.huntsvilletx.gov/171/Public-Library or follow the library on social media.

“Come by and see what’s new,” Sturdivant said. “If you haven’t been in a while, you’ll be amazed at how much we have to offer.”

My daughter hangs out at the library most days waiting for me to pick her up after work. I can't tell you just how deeply grateful this momma's heart is knowing she has a safe and fun place to hang out. ❤❤❤
