From pandemic uncertainty to sold-out shows, Stehlik’s dedication helps Huntsville’s historic venue thrive as a hub for live music, laughter, and community connection.
Bringing Life to a Historic Stage
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Old Town Theatre in downtown Huntsville has seen its share of highs and lows, but few people have done more to keep it thriving than Lois Stehlik. What began as a volunteer role in 2019 soon turned into a full commitment when Stehlik joined the board in 2020—right in the middle of the pandemic.
“It was a struggle,” she said, recalling those months when live events were shut down. “But we’re doing great now.”
The nonprofit theater, originally restored in the early 2000s, has since become one of the busiest venues in Walker County. With its classic art deco-style marquee and intimate atmosphere, the Old Town Theatre regularly draws fans of country, rock, and comedy from across the region.
A Mission Rooted in Community
Stehlik said the goal is simple—keep the arts accessible and affordable for everyone. “We work really hard to keep our calendar full and bring the arts to the community at an affordable rate,” she said. “That’s part of our nonprofit mission.”
The work involves much more than booking acts. Stehlik often acts as host, organizer, and even caretaker for visiting performers. “You have to make it the best day of their life so they want to come back,” she said. “If they don’t have a good time, they won’t.”
That personal touch has helped the theater develop lasting relationships with performers like Ricky Skaggs and the Bellamy Brothers—both of whom have returned for repeat performances.
Dancing into the Holidays
Next on the calendar is a community event close to Stehlik’s heart—the Old Town Theatre Communitywide Shindig on November 22. The Saturday-night gathering will transform the theater’s VIP area into a dance floor, featuring live music from Kevin Robinson and the Ramblers.
Tickets are $20 for general admission, and children 10 and under can attend free. “Teaching your child to two-step is just a life skill,” Stehlik said with a laugh. “We all need to know how to dance.”
She describes the evening as “laid-back, fun, and family-friendly,” with concessions available, including snacks, soft drinks, beer, and wine. “It’s about creating a space where families can enjoy music together,” she said. “We don’t have enough of that anymore.”
From Country Classics to Comedy
The upcoming months at Old Town Theatre promise a packed lineup that includes the sold-out Bellamy Brothers show, along with tributes to Foreigner, Journey, and Boston. February will bring the American Bombshells, a USO-style show honoring veterans, and later, the theater will host Darcy Lynn, the young ventriloquist who won America’s Got Talent at age 12.
“We’re trying to mix it up,” Stehlik said. “Not just country—some rock, some comedy. Comedians do really well here.”
Stehlik recently booked Doyle Dykes, considered one of the world’s top fingerstyle guitarists, as well as a psychic comedian who once appeared on America’s Got Talent. “We like to keep things interesting,” she said.
Hospitality at Its Heart
Beyond the stage lights, Stehlik’s focus on hospitality sets the tone for every event. From assembling welcome baskets to coordinating meals for touring crews, she ensures visiting artists feel at home. “It’s all about building those relationships,” she said.
That same heart for service extends beyond the theater. A retired 24-year veteran of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Stehlik also volunteers as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), representing children in the foster care system. “They need a voice,” she said. “It gives me something to live for—to make life better for somebody else.”
Her compassion and dedication haven’t gone unnoticed. “Lois brings so much joy to this community,” said Good Morning Huntsville host Rob Hipp, who interviewed her about the theater. “She doesn’t seek the credit, but she deserves it.”
Looking Ahead
As Stehlik looks toward the new year, she hopes to continue expanding the theater’s offerings while keeping its family-friendly atmosphere intact. “We’ve got something for everyone,” she said. “Whether you’re coming for the music, the laughs, or just a good night out, the Old Town Theatre is a place where Huntsville can come together.”
