Hospital honors Walker County Amateur Radio Group leaders for ongoing disaster preparedness project
Huntsville Memorial Hospital recently recognized members of the Walker County Amateur Radio Group for their continued support of the hospital’s emergency communications capabilities.
Joe Schorre, director of cardiopulmonary and emergency management, presented an Appreciation Award on behalf of the Huntsville Memorial Hospital administration team to Walker County Amateur Radio Group President Clenard Hightower, KC5IYA. The award recognized the group’s efforts in supporting the hospital’s emergency management radio program.
In addition, club member Rick Fell, WA2HRF, received an Award of Appreciation for his individual contributions. Fell was recognized for the extensive number of hours dedicated to reconfiguring commercial and amateur radio equipment to strengthen the hospital’s downtime communications capabilities.
The project is part of a months-long, ongoing effort aimed at improving both internal and external communications during emergencies. Hospital officials noted that significant progress has been made, with additional work planned to ensure continuity of communications across all levels of disaster response.
The collaboration reflects a broader focus on preparedness and resiliency, with amateur radio continuing to play a key role in maintaining reliable communications when traditional systems are unavailable.
