Faith-based group unites voices and hearts to serve seniors, veterans, and the community through music
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — For more than three decades, the Huntsville Community Choir has shared the message of hope and harmony through music. Founded in 1994, the group has become a mainstay of musical outreach across Walker County, uniting believers through sacred songs and heartfelt service.
As of this summer, the choir celebrates its 31st anniversary. With members from Huntsville, Cold Spring, Livingston, Cleveland, and surrounding areas, the interdenominational choir has never strayed from its purpose: to make a joyful noise unto the Lord and uplift others in the process.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Ministry
The Huntsville Community Choir originated as a senior choir at University Heights Baptist Church. Soon after, members of First Baptist Church and other congregations joined, expanding the choir into a wider community of singers. Eventually, the word "senior" was dropped to welcome younger members, and the name was officially changed to the Huntsville Community Choir.
Becky Hernandez, a member since 2013 and longtime ministry leader, says the choir has always been about more than music. “Our goal is to give glory to God in everything we do,” she said during a recent appearance on Good Morning Huntsville. “We bless others through the gift of music, and in return, we are blessed.”
Singing Across the Region
The choir meets weekly on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at University Heights Baptist Church. Rehearsals are held during the school year, from late August to May. Members sing a variety of music, including sacred hymns, traditional gospel, patriotic tunes, and seasonal selections.
While the choir performs in churches, it also visits assisted living centers, nursing homes, veterans’ groups, and community events. “One of our largest gatherings each year is the Senior Music Rally hosted by the Tryon Evergreen Baptist Association,” Hernandez said. “We prepare three songs and join other senior choirs in fellowship and praise.”
The choir’s reach has included over 25 local churches across East Texas, and at one time, boasted 35–40 active members. Today, the group is focused on rebuilding and welcoming new singers of all ages and backgrounds.
No Audition, Just a Willing Heart
While the ability to read sheet music is helpful, it’s not a requirement to join the Huntsville Community Choir. Hernandez encourages anyone who enjoys music—especially those with a heart for worship—to stop by and see what it’s all about. “We don’t require auditions,” she said. “Just come and sing. We’ll help you find your place.”
The choir features four-part harmony with soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections. Over the years, it has been guided by nine volunteer directors and four accompanists who generously offer their time and talents.
Bringing Comfort Through Song
One of the choir’s most meaningful missions is performing for seniors in care facilities. “Some of them haven’t heard hymns in years,” Hernandez said. “When we sing an old favorite, you can see the emotion on their faces. It brings back memories, and it brings peace.”
Scripture also plays a central role in the choir’s purpose. Hernandez often refers to Colossians 3:16–17 as inspiration: “Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts... and whatever you do, do it as a representative of the Lord.”
A Place to Belong
For Hernandez, who also leads Wilderness Ministries, the choir has provided not just musical fellowship, but spiritual support and connection. “I’ve been part of worship teams and music ministries, but there’s something special about choral harmony,” she said. “We are stronger when we blend our voices together, and when we sing for the Lord, it’s something truly joyful.”
