Community rallies around injured Huntsville police officer after early morning crash

Officer Sean Brinson remains in intensive care as investigation continues and donation fund is established

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Huntsville community is coming together in support of Officer Sean Brinson following a serious early morning crash that occurred during the response to a reported vehicle theft, according to the Huntsville Police Department.

Police said officers were notified at approximately 1:38 a.m. Dec. 16 of a vehicle that had just been stolen from the area of South Sam Houston Avenue and Angier. About six minutes later, an officer located a vehicle matching the description near 8th Street and University Avenue.

As the officer attempted to confirm the vehicle, the driver failed to stop at Avenue M and fled at a high rate of speed. Police said the suspect traveled north on Avenue M, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck Officer Brinson head-on as he responded to assist. Fourteen seconds elapsed from the time the suspect fled to the time of the crash.

The suspect was transported to a Houston-area hospital in critical condition. Due to the severity of injuries, the suspect was not arrested at the time, and charges are being considered as the investigation continues. Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen and said items inside were linked to burglaries reported earlier in the night.

Officer Brinson remains in intensive care in critical condition and is expected to undergo numerous operations in the coming weeks. A former United States Marine, Brinson is described by the department as facing a long and challenging recovery.

Community members have shown strong support for Brinson and his family. An account has been established at Prosperity Bank to accept monetary donations. Contributions may be made at the Prosperity Bank location on 11th Street, any Prosperity Bank branch, or in person at the Huntsville Police Department, with funds directed to the family.

Police officials expressed gratitude for the compassion shown by residents and said updates on Brinson’s condition will be provided as they become available.
