Local post expands education support, veteran outreach and community events
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — American Legion Sam Houston Post 95 is strengthening its role in the Huntsville community through expanded scholarships, veteran support programs and a growing calendar of public events.
Leaders Billy Papania and Brianna Tolan recently outlined the organization’s efforts, emphasizing its mission to serve both veterans and the next generation.
Scholarships open doors for local students
One of the Post’s key initiatives is the John "Fidgets" Harvey Scholarship, which focuses on students pursuing technical and trade careers.
The program recently received a boost following a successful fundraiser, bringing total available scholarship funds to approximately $17,000.
Unlike traditional academic scholarships, the program prioritizes community impact and workforce readiness. Applicants must have a connection to military service and demonstrate need through essays and recommendations.
The scholarships are available to students from Huntsville ISD, New Waverly ISD, Alpha Omega Academy and Trinity ISD, with plans to expand access in the future.
Leaders say the program reflects a growing recognition of trade careers as essential pathways.
“You can make some money doing anything with your hands,” Papania said. “You don’t have to just go get an education at a four-year university.”
Service rooted in veteran support
For Papania, involvement with the American Legion is personal.
He said his family’s military background helped shape his commitment to the organization, which supports veterans through outreach, supplies and community resources.
Post 95 participates in programs that assist homeless veterans, provide seasonal essentials like coats and offer a place for connection and support.
“I just liked the mission that they stood for,” Papania said.
The organization also collaborates with volunteers and community partners, with much of its work carried out by members behind the scenes.
Community events bring families together
The Post is preparing for a busy spring with several events open to the public.
On March 28, Post 95 will host a crawfish boil and Easter egg hunt, offering a family-friendly day with food, music and activities.
In April, the organization will hold its annual Chigger Hill barbecue cook-off, a sanctioned competition that draws teams from across Texas. The event serves as a major fundraiser supporting the Post’s programs, including youth and veteran initiatives.
“It takes a whole family to make this whole thing go off,” Papania said.
Expanding outreach and new programs
Post 95 is also working to create more opportunities for younger veterans and families to get involved.
Facility improvements and outdoor event spaces are helping accommodate larger gatherings and family participation.
In addition, the Post plans to launch a non-denominational church service beginning May 3, open to veterans, their families and the broader community.
Leaders say these efforts reflect a broader vision of growth and accessibility.
“We’re moving forward,” Tolan said, noting recent expansion in programs and participation.
Encouraging involvement
Membership in the American Legion and its affiliated groups is open to veterans and their families, with opportunities to serve through events, outreach and community support.
Post leaders encourage residents to attend events, volunteer or simply connect with members to learn more.
“Think about the future of your children,” Papania said. “Those people gave us that right and they fight for it every day.”
